Firstly compare the map size of Australia with the size of USA. Most of our population live around the seaboard. As in USA, there is a lot of vacant land, most of it barren.
The Ghan train runs through the centre of Australia, mostly desert. The towns along the way are for the railway - maintenance etc. The railway is the link for supplies. No there are no commuter trains as there is little reason to be out there. Some persons choose to travel by train and freight their vehicle on the same train as it is so desolate out there.
The train/bus trips along the coast and surrounding inland are scenic. This is from the site Forums - Frequently asked Questions & covers a lot of areas just by mouse clicking. http://www.clickforaustralia.com/austra ... rvices.htm All of the eastern seaboard is green except for central Queensland, it is dry scrub. You will be here in our winter and the southern states get quite cold, even snow in the mountains.
If you stay in Sydney, catch the Explorer buses. Most of the capital cities have these. They travel around a circuit and the driver explains the area and points out sights. They are one of those you get on & off at leisure. Red one does the city, Blue one the beaches.
Australia is so diverse and large I really do not know where to start. I think you would probably be in the same position if I asked you the same question of USA. It is very hard to give a quick answer and you probably have certain interests - buildings, mountains, etc. Lynn
